Relocating to Toronto and are now counting down the days until your flight takes off – how exciting! One of the last things to do is pack up your belongings and send them off either by air, road, rail, or sea. This can be a stressful and emotional time. We’ve gone ahead and listed some of our top tips to help make your moving day as seamless as possible.
HIRE PROFESSIONALS
- We cannot emphasis this enough: professional movers are the key feature to a smooth move. They know how to pack items safe and efficiently and should you be moving internationally; they will know how to pack and list your items in accordance with customs clearance requirements.
- Different moving companies will no doubt follow their own protocols. Some may turn up and pack absolutely everything for you, whereas some may require a little more preparation from you before they arrive. It can be overwhelming choosing which company to hire, but MAC Relocation Services can help you with all of your relocation needs, including choosing the moving company that best suits your needs.
DECLUTTER AHEAD OF TIME
- As soon as you know you are relocating to Toronto or the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and have decided to take your personal belongings with you, you should dedicate some time to organizing your belongings and decluttering as much as you can. This process might sound simple, but will likely take longer than expected as you’re not just decluttering a single room, you’re decluttering your entire home. The more you do before your move, the less you will have to do on the other end.
- When considering whether to keep an item or not, think about the last time you’ve used it and ask yourself if you see yourself using it again in the future. Chances are you will additionally find old personal items that hold sentimental value. Packing up your belongings can be an emotional process, so make sure to give yourself ample time to sort through everything. It might feel overwhelming at times, but once it’s done and everything’s settled, it will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
- When decluttering, it’s also important to consider whether your electrical items will work if you’re relocating internationally. Will you need adaptors, or will you need to buy new gadgets entirely? If you are not able to take your electrical items with you, we suggest trying to sell them so that you’re not running around last minute trying to find a buyer and arranging collection or delivery.
WHAT TO PACK FIRST
- Although some moving companies will carry out all of the packing for your (including wrapping your fragile pieces), it may still be worthwhile to box up some belongings which you do not use in your day to day lives. You will most likely find that boxing up these items will force you to organise them at the same time, which isn’t a bad thing. Grouping items that belong to the same room or space will only make your unpacking process that much easier once your belongings arrive to you in your new home in Toronto or the GTA.
WHAT TO DO WITH CLOTHES
- Again, this will likely depend on the moving company’s policy. They might ask you to leave all of your clothes in your dresser and then secure the drawers shut for the move, or they might ask you to pack your clothes separately into their own boxes.
- You should think about what clothes you will take with you when you travel rather than clothes that will follow with your belongings. Whether you’re flying or driving to your new home in Toronto or the GTA, we suggest packing a couple of suitcases to keep you going for a few weeks in case the arrival of your belongings gets delayed. Make sure to keep these separate from your other clothes on moving day so that these aren’t packed by mistake – in fact, this goes for anything important such as ID’s and travel documents!
