Canada Day with MAC Suites: A Family Legacy of Immigration, Culture and Canadian Values
At MAC Suites, Canada Day is more than a holiday – it’s a celebration of family, freedom, and the values that built both a country and a business.
For Co-Founders, Doriana Zohil-Morton and David Morton, July 1st is a time to reflect on their roots, their parents’ courage, and the gift of raising their daughters in a country that has given their families so much.
Doriana’s Story: From Istra, Croatia to the Canadian Dream
Doriana was born in Istra, a culturally rich region in what was then communist Yugoslavia. Her parents, Romano and Albina Zohil, left behind everything familiar in pursuit of a better life in Canada.
Romano was driven by a burning desire for wonder and learning. His courage opened doors to opportunities that would shape generations. He dreamed not just of survival, but of giving his children, Doriana and Jason, and granddaughters Maggie and Cristina the freedom to travel, learn, and live fully.
Albina, the steady hand behind the family’s transition, believes deeply in the power of education and expression. “Knowledge is power and it can never be taken from you,” she teaches – and she lives by this truth. Equally as important to Albina is the belief that every person has a voice and must use it. She often reminds her children and granddaughters that Canada offers more than just freedom of speech for women and children – it offers freedom of speech to all humanity. That truth, she believes, is a precious gift to protect and pass on. Romano, with his signature wit, often adds: “If you don’t have brains, you better have muscles. So stay in school and spread those wings.”
Both Albina and Romano are proud democrats at heart, steadfast believers in democratic values, freedom, equality and the right of every individual to speak, learn and live with dignity. Their cultural legacy continues today through Istrian Gardens/Istra Ucka Canadian Club, which Doriana supports passionately. The club keeps Istrian traditions alive – celebrating its music, food and community spirit – reminding Doriana of her roots and sharing them with her daughters and guests alike.
David’s Story: Community, Responsibility and Proud Canadian Roots
David comes from a proud English-Canadian family, raised by his parents Peggy and David Morton in Toronto. Together, Peggy and David Sr. raised five children with love and a deep belief in the importance of family, education, freedom and service. Their family legacy spans three generations of running a successful commercial family business, marked not only by entrepreneurial spirit but also by generosity and a commitment to giving back to the community.
David Sr. was involved with the Progressive Conservative (PC) party in Toronto’s Danforth area – not as a typical politician, but as a true community builder. He welcomed newcomers, embraced diversity, and advocated for all who called the city home. Beyond politics, he also serviced as the President of the Toronto Convention and Tourist Authority, promoting tourism and showcasing the city’s vibrancy.
Peggy came from a distinguished naval family. Her father was Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Canadian Navy, instilling values of leadership and service. Peggy herself had a strong tradition of volunteering, there were few charities that she did not get involved in, but her soft spot was delivering meals to seniors through Meals on Wheels, and was a trailblazer when she volunteered with the Junior League of Toronto, an organization dedicated to advancing women’s leadership for meaningful community impact.
David Jr. was deeply influenced by his parents’ example. He grew up with the reminder that “Canada was build by immigrants,” and he has carried forward his parents’ legacy by respecting, serving, and celebrating each new Canadian who arrives to start their journey.
The “MAC” in MAC Suites
Maggie and Cristina, daughters of Doriana and David, are the heart of the family, and a namesake of MAC Suites. They are a living symbol of the values passed down through generations.
Cristina, an accomplished Canadian immigration lawyer and founder of Zohil-Morton Law, holds a Master of Laws and helps individuals and families navigate both temporary and permanent Canadian immigration matters. Her work honours her grandparents’ legacy every day, blending advocacy with compassion. From a young age, philanthropy was ingrained in Cristina’s heart. She naturally stands up for the underdog, whether supporting classmates, volunteering, or fighting for newcomers’ rights. That same spirit guides her legal practice, where supporting others is not just a mission, but a personal calling.
Maggie, with a heart full of compassion, works with special needs children and has contributed to MAC Suites since a young age. Her soft heart, deep empathy and natural caring shine through in everything she does – from supporting guests to creating a warm, inclusive environment within the company. Currently pursuing her second master’s degree in education, Maggie is a strong advocate for mental health awareness and breaking stigma. She is passionate about creating spaces – both in education and hospitality – where people feel safe, seen and supported. Whether helping a child find their voice or welcoming a newcomer with a smile, Maggie leads with kindness and quiet strength. Her unwavering dedication to others reflects the values passed down through generations and shapes the future of education and MAC Suites.
Together, Maggie and Cristina are proof that the Canadian Dream is alive – and evolving – with each new generation.
MAC Suites: Built on Family, Fueled by Purpose

“We were welcomed here. Now we make it our mission to welcome others – with the same warmth, respect and hope.”
